The rate of alcohol related deaths in New Mexico is over 2x higher than the national average. The mission of the AHA Coalition is to advocate for effective, evidence-based policies that reduce alcohol-related harms in New Mexico. While increasing alcohol taxes is widely accepted as an effective, evidence-based strategy for increasing decreasing alcohol consumption and related harms, New Mexico has not revised its alcohol excise tax policy since 1993, over 30 years ago. During the 2025 NM Legislative Session, the AHA Coalition will introduce legislation proposing an increase in alcohol excise tax to adjust for inflation and a 12% alcohol sales tax, similar to the currently implemented tobacco and cannabis sales taxes.
