PUBLIC
COMMENT

Make your voice heard! During the legislative session, consider giving public comment in committee hearings to share your thoughts, concerns, and support for legislative efforts.

Tips & Tricks

To make the most impact, plan on speaking for 2 minutes maximum and respect the committee’s time. State clearly whether you support or oppose the bill, why you support or oppose, and don’t repeat others' points.

**Note: If you plan on writing your comment, remember that 2 minutes equals about 200 words.**

01

Address the chair & committee members.

Example: "Hello Madam/Mr. Chair and committee members, my name is [insert your name]."

02

State your affiliation to any organization (if applicable).

Example: "I am here on behalf of [insert organization]." OR "I am a private citizen."

03

State whether you support or oppose the legislation.

Example: "We/I support/oppose [insert legislation number]."

04

State why you support/oppose the legislation in about 1 minute.

Example: "Our/my reasons for supporting this legislation are that it does [insert reasons]."

05

Express gratitude.

Example: "We/I appreciate your time today."
